What is a horizontal insurance structure?

AUL files federally as an insurance company, meaning the primary reserves are held on AUL’s books. In the unlikely event that AUL would close its doors, the customer would have a direct relationship with ABIC/ARIC. Each AUL policy is printed with a direct 800 number to ABIC/ARIC, eliminating any need for the dealer to be involved in this process. In the event that ABIC/ARIC would close its doors, the primary reserves would be on AUL’s books, allowing the company to operate in a normal fashion.
